2021 Congressional Briefing on the Abuses of FERC and Needed Reforms

The VOICES coalition (Victory Over InFRACKstructure, Clean Energy inStead) hosted an hour long virtual briefing on May 4, 2021 for members of Congress on the abuses of power and law of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the harms inflicted on communities and environments, and the legislative reforms of the Natural Gas Act needed to address them. VOICES is a coalition of over 250 organizations and activists from 35 states fighting harmful natural gas infrastructure projects. The briefing featured frontline community members as well as key leaders in this effort, including Congressman Jamie Raskin and Congresswoman Nanette Diaz Barragán.

PRESS RELEASE

“As chair of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, I was disturbed by allegations that the FERC process allows natural gas companies to abuse landowners and farmers who live along proposed pipeline routes. So, I decided to investigate and dig deeper into the issues we were hearing about at FERC, and what we found was frankly appalling. The FERC process demands immediate reform, and I am committed to addressing these issues through continued oversight of FERC and through legislative reform.”

Congressman Jamie Raskin, chair of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties
